How to buy a speaker system?

Hello, I recently purchased an LCD TV and DVD player. I want to buy a speaker system to complete the package. But I have no idea where to start. I do not want to buy home theater in a box. What I want is speaker independent. Can anyone tell me where to start. I can go up to $ 350. Do I need an amplifier? Thank you all for the comments. What do you think about this site Frys.com. if you want to get a speaker system that is not all come in a box i would recommend getting a Sony receiver that extends over $ 200 and a set of speakers around $ 150 … to be honest, if only is looking to spend $ 350 you may be better to get one in a box already.
